Suddenly, a blue screen and a mysterious message are displayed when trying to start up the computer or while using it. PC failure! ?? The important family photos stored inside are okay! ?? I’m worried. When does the blue screen occur? We will show you how to identify the cause and how to solve it without losing data.

1. Possible Causes and Remedies

A blue screen is a message when a serious error occurs in the Windows OS. When a problem occurs in the software such as memory, HDD / SSD, driver, etc. and the computer cannot continue to operate, a blue screen appears and “The PC needs to be restarted due to a problem” “A Problem has not been” A message such as “detected and windows has not been shut down…” is displayed. It may occur while the computer is starting up or while working.

Do not rush to turn off the power when a blue screen occurs. Even if it doesn’t seem to be working, the computer keeps an error log. In most cases, it will restart automatically after about 10 minutes.

If it can be started successfully after restarting, it is recommended to connect an external HDD or USB memory and copy important data. Please note that if you continue to use it as it is, a blue screen may occur again or you may not be able to start it.

If the blue screen and restart are repeated endlessly and cannot be started, or if it does not restart automatically after waiting for 10 minutes or more, press the power button to force it to quit. If an English message is displayed, check the error code (STOP code) and make a note of it before forcibly terminating. The error code is mainly displayed under the word “Technical Information”. The 10-digit alphanumeric characters help identify the cause of the blue screen to some extent.

1-1. If there is a problem with the driver

A driver is software required for a personal computer to recognize devices such as internal HDD / SSD, external HDD / SSD, and USB memory. Drivers include drivers that come standard with Windows, drivers that are added by Windows Update, and drivers that users install themselves. If something goes wrong, the device may not be recognized, the computer may stop working, and a blue screen may occur.

If you see the following error code, the driver may be causing the blue screen.

Solution 1: Remove the external device and start it.

If you have an external HDD or USB memory connected, removing all of them and booting may solve the problem, so give it a try. If this solves the problem, check if the driver for each external device is the latest, and if it is old, install the latest driver and connect one by one.

If a problem occurs when you connect a specific device, the driver for that device may not be compatible with your computer, or the device itself may be defective. We recommend that you stop using it and consult the device manufacturer. If the data required for the problematic device is stored.

Solution 2: Run antivirus software

You may also see a blue screen if your computer is infected with a virus and it causes an error. If you can start it after rebooting, it is recommended to run antivirus software and check for virus infection just in case. If you are infected, you may be able to resolve it by removing the virus.

Solution 3: Uninstall the update program

If you experience a blue screen after Windows Update, you may be able to resolve it by uninstalling the update and returning to the state before the update. However, please note that if there is something wrong with the HDD / SSD, doing this may make the symptom worse. If you have important data stored on your computer, we recommend that you recover the data before executing it.

Uninstallation procedure for updates (Windows 10)

In Windows 10, you can launch Startup Repair and uninstall updates by killing and booting several times.

  • Click “Advanced Options” on the screen after Startup Repair has started and automatic repair is complete.
  • Click Advanced Options.
  • Click Uninstall Updates.
  • After that, follow the instructions on the screen.

Solution 4: Execute “System Restore” and “Restore to Initial State” (Windows 10)

If you get a blue screen after installing the application, it may be due to the application driver. In this case, you may be able to resolve it by performing a “System Restore” or “Restore to Initial State” to return to the previous state.

Performing System Restore deletes all data saved after the restore point. When you execute “Restore to initial state”, all data will be deleted and the state at the time of purchase will be restored. Also, if the restoration fails, the previous data may be lost. If you have the data you need, we recommend that you perform a data recovery before doing this.

Steps to perform “System Restore”

In Windows 10, you can launch Startup Repair and perform a System Restore by killing and booting several times.

  • Click “Advanced Options” on the screen after Startup Repair has started and automatic repair is complete.
  • Click Advanced Options.
  • Click System Restore.
  • After that, follow the instructions on the screen.
Procedure to execute “Restore to initial state”

In Windows 10, you can launch Startup Repair and perform a System Restore by killing and booting several times.

  • Click “Advanced Options” on the screen after Startup Repair has started and automatic repair is complete.
  • Click “Reset this PC”.
  • After that, follow the instructions on the screen.

Solution 5: How to execute “Uninstall Updates”, “System Restore”, and “Restore to Initial State” on Windows 7 / XP / Vista

If your Windows 7 / XP / Vista computer cannot boot normally, boot in safe mode or recovery CD to load and boot only the minimum drivers, then “Uninstall Updates” and “System Restore”. You can execute “Restore to initial state”. For details on how to boot in safe mode and recovery CD, refer to the instruction manual of your computer or the support page on the manufacturer’s site.

If the above solutions do not solve the problem, the memory or internal HDD / SSD may be defective. Please refer to 1-2 and 1-3.

1-2. If there is a memory problem

Memory is a place where data is temporarily stored so that the personal computer can process it efficiently. Since memory can process data faster than HDD / SSD, the performance and capacity of memory greatly affect the processing speed of a personal computer. If the memory fails, data processing cannot be performed normally, so the computer may stop operating and a blue screen may occur.

If you see the following error code, it is possible that the memory is causing the blue screen.

0x0000002E ・ 0x00000050 ・ 0x0000007F ・ 0x000000F2 etc.

Remedy

The memory of a personal computer is often installed by inserting it into a slot on the internal board (motherboard). If a poor contact occurs, such as when the plug is loosened, the memory will not be recognized and a blue screen may occur.

If you can easily remove the memory cover, you may be able to resolve the poor contact by removing and reinserting the memory. However, since memory is sensitive to static electricity, it is necessary to take sufficient measures to prevent static electricity from being generated during work. Also, if you remove the cover of the PC, you may not be able to receive repairs from the manufacturer, so please check the instruction manual or the support page on the manufacturer’s site in advance.

If the above error code is displayed and the problem persists even after reinserting the memory, the memory may be defective. Consider replacing it with a normal memory. The type of memory and the replacement method differ depending on the computer, so check the instruction manual or the support page on the manufacturer’s site. When requesting replacement from the manufacturer, it is recommended to recover the data in advance.

1-3. If there is a problem with the HDD / SSD

If the internal HDD / SSD of the personal computer breaks down, or if the connection cable of the HDD / SSD breaks or causes poor contact, the personal computer may stop operating and a blue screen may occur.

If the following error code is displayed, the blue screen may be caused by the HDD / SSD.

0x0000007A ・ 0x000000ED ・ 0x000000F4 etc.

Remedy

If you have an external HDD or USB memory connected, removing all of them and booting may solve the problem, so give it a try. If this is the solution, the device may be loaded in the wrong order.

A personal computer is equipped with a program called “BIOS” that manages and controls parts on the internal board (motherboard), keyboard, mouse, storage, drive, etc. When the personal computer starts up, this BIOS first starts up and recognizes each part. After that, Windows and Mac OS saved in the internal storage will start up and you will be able to operate your computer. It takes time to start up the computer because these steps are performed one by one.

The BIOS is usually set to boot the OS from internal storage. However, if for some reason the setting is changed to boot from a USB memory or USB external hard disk, the internal storage will not be recognized as a boot device, and the internal storage and Windows system files will be normal. However, the computer cannot be started. Press the BIOS call key at boot time to boot the BIOS and reconfigure it correctly.

The BIOS call key and setting method differ depending on the manufacturer and model, so refer to the instruction manual of your computer or the support page on the manufacturer’s site.

If the HDD / SSD is normal, the name of the HDD / SSD will be displayed on the BIOS setting screen. If it does not appear, the HDD / SSD or cable may be defective. If you have important data stored on your computer, we recommend that you recover the data before repairing.

2. Why data recovery is needed before repair

If your computer needs repair, many people will ask the manufacturer or repair company. One thing to keep in mind here is that when you repair your computer, all the internal data may be initialized and returned to the state it was in when you purchased it. Before requesting, please carefully check the scope of service and precautions, understand the risks, and send it for repair.

If you have important data stored on your computer, we recommend that you consult with a data recovery company before requesting repairs to ensure the safety of your data. Even if the storage such as the internal HDD / SSD of the personal computer fails and is not recognized, if the saved data remains, it may be possible to retrieve it and recover it.
